One of the most common - and often overlooked - causes of sleep problems in children is <strong>overstimulation<\/strong>. In this article, you will discover what exactly overstimulation is, why it affects sleep and what you can do as a parent to help your child unwind better.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-wat-is-overprikkeling\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is overstimulation?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Over-stimulation occurs when a child <strong>receives more stimuli than it can process<\/strong>. Those stimuli can be visual (light, movement), auditory (sound), emotional or physical. During the day, children constantly come into contact with all kinds of impressions: school, sounds, conversations, screens, toys, emotions... and all this information has to be processed in the brain.<\/p>\n\n<p>In young children - or children with a sensitive nervous system - the capacity to process all these stimuli is still limited. If there are insufficient moments of rest, this can lead to tension that only really shows itself... at bedtime.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-hoe-beinvloedt-overprikkeling-de-slaap\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does overstimulation affect sleep?<\/h2>\n\n<p>When a child is overexcited, the body stays in a state, so to speak <strong>'on' mode<\/strong> standing. The nervous system is alert, the head keeps grinding, and the body produces stress hormones such as cortisol, resulting in insufficient production of melatonin (the sleep hormone). Result: difficulty falling asleep or restless sleep.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-typische-slaapproblemen-door-overprikkeling\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typical sleep problems due to overstimulation:<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Difficulty falling asleep (even when the child seems \"tired\")<\/li>\n\n<li>Frequent waking or crying at night<\/li>\n\n<li>Nightmares or restless dreams<\/li>\n\n<li>Restless turning or tossing in bed<\/li>\n\n<li>Waking up early with stress signals (irritable, tearful)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-oorzaken-van-overprikkeling-voor-het-slapen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of overstimulation before sleep<\/h2>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-te-druk-dagritme\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Too busy daily routine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>A full day without rest breaks ensures that the brain has no chance to discharge in between.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-schermen-en-digitale-prikkels\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Screens and digital stimuli<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Tablets, TV and phones inhibit melatonin production and stimulate the brain until the last moment of the day.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-luidruchtig-of-fel-speelgoed-in-de-avond\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Noisy or bright toys in the evening<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Playing with luminous or noisy toys actually activates the nervous system instead of calming it.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-4-emotionele-gebeurtenissen-of-spanningen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Emotional events or tensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>An argument, busy birthday or change in day structure can cause increased alertness.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-5-geen-duidelijke-overgang-naar-rust\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong>No clear transition to rest<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>If the transition between playtime and bedtime is too abrupt, the child lacks a natural winding down of stimuli.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"h-oplossingen-zo-help-je-je-kind-tot-rust-te-komen\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solutions: here's how to help your child calm down<\/h2>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-1-bouw-een-vaste-avondroutine-op\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Build a regular evening routine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>A predictable sequence of actions (e.g. cleaning up - bath - reading a book - sleeping) provides recognition and security. Children relax more quickly with repetition.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-2-kies-voor-rustgevende-activiteiten-in-het-laatste-uur\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Opt for restful activities in the last hour<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Colouring, puzzles, reading aloud, building quietly or singing softly help calm the nervous system.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"h-3-schermvrij-vanaf-minimaal-een-uur-voor-bedtijd\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Screen-free from at least one hour before bedtime<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Turn off screens (tablet, TV, phone) no later than 1 hour before sleeping. Use a warm bath or footbath<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>Heat helps cool down the body literally and figuratively.
