After a long day at reception, you soon hear:
\u201cHow was today?\u201d
And often you get a short reply back: \u201cNice.\u201d
But what nice<\/em> exactly means, then, remains a mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toddlers experience so much in one day that they don't always know where to start. With the right questions, you can help your child put into words what they feel, learn and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are three questions that do lead to real conversations <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. \u201cWho did you play with today?\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This question is concrete and recognisable.
Toddlers think in people and moments, not in time or order. Talking about friends often automatically releases a story about what<\/em> they did - from making a structure to making up a role-play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extra tip:<\/strong> Let your child imitate or act it out. Talking through play often works better than just using words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. \u201cWhat did you like doing most today?\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Instead of \u201cHow was it?\u201d, this gives you direction.
Children immediately think of an activity: playing in the sandbox, doing puzzles, crafts or riding the train.
That way, you will discover what really motivates your child - and you can connect to it nicely at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extra tip:<\/strong> Use recognisable words: \u201cWas it something about colours, building or moving?\u201d That's how you help them remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. \u201cWas there anything that was a bit difficult today?\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A gentle way to talk about emotions.
Maybe something didn't go as planned, or your child felt alone for a while.
By asking this question calmly (without judgement), your child learns that feelings are allowed to be there - and that talking helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extra tip:<\/strong> Name something yourself that you found difficult today. That makes it safe and equal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
